What is Postural Tachycardia Syndrom (PoTS)?
PoTS is chronic health condition characterised by low blood volume and a high pulse when in the upright position.
Do I have PoTS?
To be diagnosed with PoTS you must see a specialist who is familiar with the condition. Only one in ten health professionals is aware of the condition. Most specialists with knowledge of the condition are Neurologists, Cardiologists, Endocrinologists and Rheumatologists.
What are the diagnostic criteria for PoTS?
To be diagnosed with PoTS, you must have a standing pulse which is at least 30bpm higher than your supine (lying down) pulse. You will also be presenting with symptoms such as tachycardia, dizziness, breathlessness, weakness, tingling, numbness, nausea, brain fog or any other similar symptoms. Other health conditions which might cause these symptoms or an increase in standing heart rate will also need to be ruled out. The condition can be diagnosed using a Tilt Table Test or by controlled measurement of your heart rate in various positions.
Is there a cure for PoTS?
Unfortunately there is no cure for PoTS. However, a variety of treatments is available to help relieve some of the symptoms.
What treatments are available?
The first line treatment for PoTS is increased salt and fluid intake. This helps to increase blood volume and counteract symptoms.
